Tips for cleaning your carpets, rugs, and hard flooring

Our floors are often one of the last things on our list when it comes to cleaning. But freshening up your hard floors and carpets will not only leave your home looking and smelling great, but can also help lower the spread of germs and coronavirus (COVID-19).

Here’s our complete guide to cleaning your carpets, rugs, and hard flooring.

Cleaning your carpets

While many of us give our carpets a once over with the hoover every few days, it’s important to also spend time vacuuming those hard to reach areas. Move furniture out of the way and make sure you hoover all of the corners in your home where dust and germs can often linger.

If you have a steam cleaner, you can disinfect your carpets using a mixture of hot water and white vinegar. However, you can also eliminate germs on your carpets by lightly misting them with white vinegar using a spray bottle before letting them dry naturally.

Cleaning your rugs

Rugs are often more delicate than carpets and so require a little extra care when it comes to deep cleaning. It’s best to wait until a warm, sunny day as your rug can then easily dry outside in the sunshine.

After vacuuming both sides thoroughly, take your rug outside and hose it down. Use a brush to work your carpet cleaner into the fibres. We advise using a cleaner that’s designed for use on rugs or carpets, as homemade solutions may do more harm than good. Afterwards, hose your rug down to remove any suds and use a squeegee to get rid of any excess water. Leave it to dry outside on a raised area such as a table, or in a garage or a shed, before bringing it back inside.

Cleaning hardwood, vinyl and laminate flooring

The majority of us will have some form of hard flooring in our homes, and it’s often the preferred choice as it’s so easy to clean. But again, while our regular routine will include vacuuming and mopping, there are a few additional steps you can take to disinfect your floors.

After thoroughly vacuuming to remove any dust and debris, use a floor cleaner or a mixture of apple cider vinegar and warm water to clean your floors. To go one stage further and disinfect your flooring, use a white vinegar solution on vinyl and laminate or a specially designed disinfectant on hardwood floors.

Remember, staying on top of a regular cleaning routine will help ensure your home stays clean and safe for you and your family. And when it comes to rugs or wood flooring, always use a specially designed solution to prevent any damage. Happy cleaning!
