As the spring cleaning begins, we feel it’s time to talk about the home trends we are expected to see this year and the best ways you can utilise these to bring your rooms to life. So we have collated a list of the top 5 interior trends of 2022 so you can start to see the dos and don’ts for designing your home.
1. Bold colours and patterns
Eye-catching homes are the way forward this year. Expect to see a lot of bold colours and patterns reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s, and green in all shades as everyone continues to bring the outdoors in after the pandemic. Seventies decor and colours are definitely back. We will be seeing more terracotta, sage and mustard colours as well as some mid-century furniture trademarks: peg legs on cabinets and tables, teakwood tones and highly textured fabrics.
2. Traditional details are making a big comeback
With so much change around the world over the past few years, it’s no surprise that more and more people are craving a sense of comfort, timelessness or even a bit of nostalgia in their homes. From pattern mixing, skirted or flanged furniture, and the incorporation of antique pieces, this new year is all about honouring our roots. Expect to see English roll arm sofas, wingback chairs, simple dining tables based on antique styles and pieces with detail and some history. We’re also going to see a lot more natural materials become popular again. Marble, real wood, linens, mohair to incorporate as much of the outside world as possible.
3. Shades of brown
Chocolate brown is back! But this time chocolate brown isn’t just being paired with orange shag textures, look out for pairings with a deep neutral for rich elegant timeless spaces. Neutrals will take a bit of a back seat in 2022 as it’s time for a palette cleanser as people start to experiment with colour again, but the palette will stay very close to hues you’d find in nature. We predict paint rollers will be dipped in rosy, terracotta tones, swathing rooms from wall to ceiling for a monochromatic moment that brings that all-around cosy element.
4. Colourful kitchens
As we slowly emerge out of the pandemic, with a feeling of hope and positivity for the future, bright and optimistic colour combinations throughout the home will become more appealing. Kitchens are no longer confined to neutrals, blues or greens. There is a move to introduce a broader colour palette in this space with colourful stoves and AGAs, painted walls, accessories and splashbacks. Kitchen designers are introducing multiple shades to cabinets, differentiating from high and low-level furniture and kitchen islands. For a more confident look, coloured cabinets are even being alternated in shade, creating a modern and playful space. It can be retro, traditional or modern in feel, simple and orderly or bold and chaotic, but whatever form it takes, there is no doubt that print and pattern plays a major part within interiors for 2022.
5. Zen Interiors
Bringing these calm and minimalistic ideas into your home is a reflection of a clear and undistracted mind. Such as light wood, clean lines, and floating surfaces set the tone for zen-living. These spaces lean toward a less-is-more approach while keeping decor organic and natural, plants are often included for a calming aesthetic as well.
